What is Ayurveda

The word “Ayurveda” has derived out of fusion of two separate words – “Ayu” i.e. life and “veda” i.e. knowledge. Thus in literal meaning Ayurveda is the science of life. Ayurveda, a traditional form of medicine has been in practice for over 5000 years and is now recognised by WHO as one of the most effective traditional alternative medicinal systems in existence in the world. In fact, history crowns Ayurveda as ‘the mother of all medicines’. The most sacred and oldest among all sciences, Ayurveda itself is considered to be a complete system of medicine which helps to maintain a perfect harmony between man and nature.


Abhyanga (Medicated Oil massage)

This therapy is characteristic body massage therapy with medicinal herbal oil dependant on each body constitution. It helps in toning the entire body by improving blood circulation in turn relaxing both body and mind.

Gambheera-abhyangam (Deep tissue massage)

Massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders.


Bhashpa Swedam (Medicated Steam Bath)

This therapy helps in opening up the pores and purifying the body by eliminating different types of toxins from the body. Specially selected herbs are used to produce the medicinal steam for this therapy


Siro-abhyanga (Indian Head Massage)

This extremely relaxing treatment starts with the application of oil on the vertex of the head followed by a gentle head massage to release the stress accumulated in the tissues, muscles and joints of the head, face, neck and shoulders.

Marma Massage (Stimulating vital point)

This treatment techniques has been originated from the ancient art of ‘Kalari payattu” – a martial art from Kerala, South India. It helps in correcting imbalances in the tri-dosha, through the manipulation of the 108 Marma points. “Marma points” comprises 108 vital points in the body that would coincide with the key acupuncture points.

Nasyam: (Nasal application)

As nostrils are considered to be the doorways to the brain, after doing preparatory procedures medicated oils, powders or smoke will be introduced through nostrils. It helps to remove the excess humors accumulated in the various sinus and throat region. It is considered to be very effective for migraine headaches, ailments associated with central nervous system, psychosomatic diseases, hormonal imbalance, rheumatic complaints, loss of taste and smell etc.

Kizhis – Bolus Bag Massages

The entire or a specific part of the body is massaged with a warm linen bag containing Dosha specific medicines. The choices of 3 specific massages are:

Rejuvenation – using B-vitamin powerful grains, which help to slow down the aging process.

Detoxification – using powdered herbs to relieve the congestion of the skin and to allow excess sweating and natural evacuation of toxins.

Releasing pain – using a blend of medicinal leaves to improve circulation. Beneficial in nerve cramps, tingling of the limbs, various rheumatic conditions and Reynaud’s disease.

Patra potala swedam (leaf bolus massage- ilakizhi)

It’s effective in relieving the swelling, neurological problems etc

Podi Kizhi (dry powder massage)

This therapy helps to improve blood circulation. It has got an additional advantage of improving the complexion of skin.

Narangakizhi (Lemon bolus massage):

In this treatment, lemon with other herbs is specially prepared and is held inside a linen cloth, which is made into a bundle. This is then soaked in warm medicated oil and massaged by two therapists in a rhythmic motion. Effective treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, stiff joints, low backache, generalized body pain and osteoarthritis.


This therapy has the power to heal the internal wounds. This therapy is the gift of Kerala to the Ayurvedic medicine. The main component of this therapy is the medicinal rice called Njavara. This rice is made as a kizhi i.e. , a bundle. This bundle is dipped in a mixture of milk and medicinal liquid and the whole body will be soaked in this mixture. This treatment increases the immunity and it is a rejuvenation therapy as well. This therapy is completed only when the kizhi becomes empty. This therapy has the power to heal the internal wounds. Arthritis, paralysis, joint pains, sore muscles, are benefitted by this therapy. This therapy makes the person capable to bear the stress. It improves the skin tone. This can be done to healthy person as a powerful rejuvenator.


As the term refers medicated liquids will be allowed to flow as an uninterrupted stream over whole body or to a specific part of body. There are many specific Dharas listed in Ayurveda, Sirodhara, Sarvangadhara, Thakradhara, Dhanyamladhara etc


A weak stream of “dosha” specific oil or medicated liquid flows continuously on the forehead for a specific duration to stimulate the nervous and hormonal systems thus bringing tranquillity and clarity of mind. Shirodhara has been traditionally seen to help with fatigue, mental exhaustion, anxiety, insomnia, mental disorders, headache, excessive thinking, nervousness, and many other conditions commonly affecting today’s sedentary lifestyle.

Sarvangadhara: (Pizhichil)

Here medicated milk, decoctions or oils will be poured over whole body.

Chavutti Thirummal (Massage with Foot) :

This is a special art of massage in which the masseur does the massage with one foot while holding on to a string. This treatment is recommended for obesity, certain types of injuries, backache and inter-vertebral disc prolapse.

Herbal Facial : (Mukha-saundaryam)

After massaging the face with oil, certain herbal preparations and creams are applied over the face. This would help in toning the facial skin.

Padabhyangam : (Foot reflexology)

This is an oil massage meant for legs and feet. Checks pain, oedema and increases blood circulation to the lower extremities.

Pichu :

Cloth or cotton soaked in warm medicated oil is put on the affected area; especially the joints. The treatment is effective for joint and muscle pains, stiffness and arthritis.
